Know the plant

UC IPM describes rosemary as suited to sun or partial shade and well-drained conditions. New plants need regular attention to the root ball; established landscape drought tolerance does not mean a small container never needs water.

Plan for your climate

Check the plant label and local Extension guidance for winter care in your region. Decide whether you will move the pot seasonally before choosing an oversized, heavy container. Record the clearance needed through the door if it will be brought inside.

Style around the plant

Use a saucer only where needed and keep it free of standing water. Compare the plant’s actual root ball with the inside dimensions of the pot. A compact starter should not be purchased solely because a styled picture shows a mature shrub.
