Know the plant
Iowa State distinguishes upright culinary thymes from creeping ornamental forms. Common thyme is a compact culinary plant; varieties differ in fragrance, foliage, and habit. Choose a labeled plant for the intended use rather than treating every thyme listing as interchangeable.
Make a small plant ledger
Write the variety name, intended location, and container dimensions together. Photograph the nursery label for your own records. This makes it easier to replace a plant you enjoy without guessing later from a vague product name.
Buy one coherent setup
Choose the pot and growing mix after reading the selected plant’s care instructions. Leave a place to set down watering tools and clippings. Use an existing small tray or saucer if it fits, rather than building an unnecessarily large accessory list.
