Know the plant

Utah State Extension describes mint as vigorous and spreading, suited to sun or partial shade with moist conditions. Named varieties are more reliably obtained as plants or cuttings than as seed-grown lookalikes.

Choose a contained layout

Set one pot where stems can be checked and trimmed without reaching across other containers. Leave room around its base for inspection. A pot beside a raised bed is easier to monitor than a plant mixed invisibly among other roots.

Buy for access

Choose a container you can move or divide when necessary. Write the variety on a reusable marker so you know which plant you like before buying more. Avoid adding fertilizer or a second plant merely because the original pot looks small on day one.
