Know the plant
Sweet basil is a tender annual. Minnesota Extension recommends six to eight hours of bright light daily and a container that drains. A dark kitchen corner is not equivalent to a sunny outdoor position.
Plan the setup
Make a note of when sunlight reaches the intended spot. Choose a pot around the starter plant and its expected growth rather than a decorative pot alone. Place a watering tray where it will protect the surface without keeping the pot submerged.
Build a care routine
Check the mix before watering; wind and heat can change how fast a pot dries. Snip young growth as needed and monitor flowering. Follow local seasonal advice before moving the plant outdoors. Keep a short note of the date, location, and watering observations so a change in growth has some context.
