Start with the packet

Minnesota Extension recommends suitable seed-starting media, containers with drainage, and careful planning of light and timing. A windowsill can vary sharply in temperature; the location needs checking rather than an automatic assumption that it is ideal.

Count the plants you need

List the final garden spaces first, then decide how many seedlings and a small backup you intend to raise. Use the packet’s sowing and transplant directions. More cells mean more later potting space, labels, and watering attention.

Set up a contained work area

Measure the tray footprint, its drip tray, and the space needed as plants grow. Keep variety names and dates with the tray. If using lighting, follow the fixture’s setup instructions and confirm that the chosen space supports the arrangement.
