Know the crop

Maryland Extension distinguishes dwarf or patio types from much larger vines. Cherry tomatoes can grow on compact plants or tall plants, so the size of the fruit alone is not a reliable guide to the space required.

Build a complete footprint

Put the container, intended support, and access path on the same sketch. Confirm the variety’s requirements with its supplier before choosing the pot. A trellis that fits the pot mouth may still occupy more space once the plant develops.

Choose supplies together

Match support height and attachment style to the container and variety. Think about moving and watering the filled pot before it becomes heavy. Do not buy a small decorative cover first and assume a suitable growing container will fit inside it.

Approximate straight-sided cylinder only. Tapered pots, drainage structures, compaction, and root-ball shape can change the real quantity.
