Know the plant

Illinois Extension notes that parsley germinates slowly, prefers moist well-drained conditions, and needs care around its taproot when transplanted. New plants are generally started each season rather than relying on the second year’s bolting growth.

Choose your starting route

If you want a quicker visible setup, compare a starter plant with starting seed. If choosing seed, allow time before deciding germination has failed and follow the packet. Label the pot immediately so it does not get mistaken for an empty container.

Plan around harvesting

Put the container where you can inspect and reach it easily. Keep a note of how much you actually use before adding several more plants. A single manageable container is a better first purchase than a mixed herb arrangement whose plants need different care.
