The practical distinction

Maryland Extension emphasizes drainage openings for container growing. A decorative outer vessel is not automatically a growing pot. Check where excess water will go before choosing a cover, tray, or riser.

Measure the nesting space

Measure the inner diameter at the narrowest point, the usable depth, and any raised base inside the cover. Leave enough access to remove the growing pot and inspect the space below it. Do not rely only on the decorative pot’s widest outside dimension.

Plan the watering routine

Decide where the plant can drain and how you will empty collected water. Match the saucer to the pot base. Reuse a suitable existing tray if possible; a large accessory order does not fix a container with no workable way to remove water.

Your planning tool.

Approximate straight-sided cylinder only. Tapered pots, drainage structures, compaction, and root-ball shape can change the real quantity.
